Effects Advice

Although Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that often has no symptoms and is easily curable, it is foolish to think that this disease is not dangerous. There are some serious health concerns that can result if Chlamydia is left untreated. Reproductive problems as well as other health concerns can result from failure to properly treat Chlamydia.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) occurs in as many as 40% o f women who do not seek treatment for Chlamydia. While Chlamydia often infects the cells of cervix, the infection can spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries if it is not treated. This spreading of the infection can lead to PID. Infertility is one of many concerns that results from PID. When the fallopian tubes become infected, there are often resultant scars that prevent eggs from being fertilized. PID can also cause an ectopic pregnancy where the fertilized egg begins to develop in the fallopian tube instead of in the uterus. Chronic pelvic pain may also result from untreated Chlamydia. This pain is usually the result of scar tissue that develops when the Chlamydia infection is left untreated.

Children born to women with untreated Chlamydia are at risk. When Chlamydia is undetected and left untreated during a pregnancy, it could result in a premature delivery. Additionally, the children born to an infected mother are at risk for eye infections such as conjunctivitis and pinkeye as well as pneumonia.

There are also a variety of other complications that may result from failure to treat a Chlamydia infection. Some of these complications include inflammation of the bladder and proctitis. Furthermore patients with untreated cases of Chlamydia put themselves at an increased risk of contracting HIV when they engage in intercourse with a person who is infected by the HIV virus.

Men are also at risk for complications that can result from an untreated case of Chlamydia. Just like women, men are more susceptible to HIV when they have an untreated STD such as Chlamydia. Furthermore, men who fail to seek treatment for Chlamydia often have a resulting infection of the urethra. This infection can spread and result in pain, fever and infertility.
